The Benghazi terror attack was back under the microscope Wednesday thanks to riveting testimony from three so-called ‘whistle blowers’ during the House Oversight Committee hearing. Prior to the hearing, Democrats felt Republicans were on a ‘witch hunt‘mainly focused on hurting Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 chances, while Republicans reiterated they wanted the ‘truth’ and focused on what they felt was a failure of the Obama administration. The question remains, where do we go from here?
A big concern for Republicans was that the attack was initially blamed on protests surrounding a YouTube video. Deputy chief of mission in Libya, Gregory Hicks, who has since been demoted, indicated that no protests existed. Hicks said that the video’s release was a “non-event,” and after being shown a clip of Hillary Clinton at a previous hearing, shouting her now-infamous line: ”What difference does it make?” in reference to the cause of the attacks, he replied by saying the better question was: “What difference DID it make?”
“It negatively affected our ability to get the FBI team quickly to Benghazi,” Foreign Service officer Gregory Hicks said. President Mohamed Yusuf al-Magariaf was “insulted in front of his own people. His credibility was reduced. His ability to lead his country was damaged,” Hicks said.
This statement only fueled the anger of conservatives, since Hillary Clinton, President Obama, and Susan Rice all initially blamed the video for the attack.
It was obvious that one of primary objectives in the hearing seemed to be to focus on the State Department and their culpability in the response to the attack that killed four Americans. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) indicated that there is a “glaring problem” that will come out, and though he couldn’t yet provide further details, “there was an omission that was given to the Intelligence Committee.” While some feel like the fact that there could have been a cover-up surrounding the events is glaringly obvious, others feel that Republican “conspiracy theories” were debunked by the testimony.
After the hearing, Chairman Darrell Issa (R- Calif.) said, “the hearing is over; the investigation is not.” Be sure to stay tuned to ViralRead for continuous coverage of Benghazi.
