Two days after his resignation as acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, Steven Miller faced tough questions Friday from Republican members of the House Ways and Means Committee. Asked by Washington State Rep. Dave Reichert for the name of the IRS employee responsible for targeting conservative groups, Miller answered: “I don’t have that name, sir. … That, I don’t remember.”
Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, who was Mitt Romney‘s GOP vice presidential running mate last year, got Miller to admit that, while the terms “Tea Party” and “Patriot” were used to identify non-profit applications as “political,” there was no such use of “Progressive” or “Organizing” to flag applications for additional IRS scrutiny.
California Rep. Devin Nunes pointed out that, while Miller has resigned and said he takes responsibility for the inappropriate actions at the federal tax agency, the former IRS boss repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
