YouTube Now Offers Paid Channels

In a move announced yesterday on the Huffington Post, YouTube will begin offering 30 paid channels along with its traditional advertising based platform.

This shift has finally brought B movie great Roger Corman into the new media age. The creator of such memorable films as Sharktopus and Attack of the 50ft. Cheerleader has a cult following and has resisted offers to distribute his work via new media until now.

YouTube is not the first advertiser driven content provider to offer paid platforms. Hulu is the most obvious, but even Vimeo has shifted to allow creators to require users to pay for content. This shift opened the door for Kristen Bell’s new project Some Girls to distribute exclusively on Vimeo on Demand.

These market shifts are finally opening up an opportunity for independent filmmakers to monetize their projects on new media outlets.
