8-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Sees his Wish Come True

U.S. Soccer may have seen its most stellar performance of this season as one player scored four goals in a single match — including the game-winner. No matter what they tried, the Portland Timbers were unable to contain the 60 lb. freight-train that is Atticus Lane-Dupree.

Lane-Dupree is an 8-year-old cancer survivor, and with the help of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, he and his youth team, The Green Machine, got to take the pitch against some of their favorite stars, including Darlington Nagbe, Mikael Silvestre, Jack Jewsbury, and Will Johnson. The Timbers organization pulled out all the stops including a personalized locker with full gear and an official single file entrance into Jeld-Wen Field in front of an estimated 3,000 fans (who made sure to boo whenever the pros scored a goal.)

In a close match, The Green Machine eked out the victory 10-9 with Lane-Dupree’s dramatic game-winner coming with just seconds remaining.

Oftentimes sports can get it way wrong (we’re looking at you and your funeral garb, NY Knicks), but sometimes, sports remembers that it’s about playing a game and inspiring true fans…and then sports gets it just right.
