Three More Suspects Arrested in Connection with Boston Marathon Bombings; Attended UMass-Dartmouth With Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

The Boston Police Department announced via its official Twitter feed Wednesday morning that it had taken three additional suspects into custody in the course of its investigation of last month’s attack.

Police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca confirmed the tweet’s validity, but refused to answer further questions and directed reporters to the FBI.

The April 15 bombings of the Boston Marathon killed three people and injured more than 260. One suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was killed in a shootout with the police. His younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured and has been charged with the federal crime of using a weapon of mass destruction.

UPDATE: The Boston Globe reports that a law enforcement source has identified two of the men arrested as Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, both from Kazakhstan and students at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had attended UMass-Dartmouth.

UPDATE II: Boston Fox affiliate WFXT reports that the “suspects were expected to be charged with obstruction of justice.” The two immigrants from Kazakhstan were detained April 20 on suspicion of visa violations; the third suspect is reportedly a U.S.  citizen. The men may have helped hide or destroy evidence, NBC News reported.

UPDATE III: The Washington Post cites law enforcement officials as saying the three suspects “disposed of material, which ended up at a Boston area landfill, at the request of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev following the bombings. One official said the unspecified material may have been thrown into a dumpster on or near the campus and that the dumpster subsequently was emptied at the landfill.”

UPDATE IV: The third suspect in the case is identified as Robel Phillipos in a criminal complaint filed in federal court.
