Last week, the citizens of the United States were rocked by the revelation that its own government was listening to their phone calls.
The NSA…er, Big Brother is watching you.
Today it has been reported by Amazon that sales of George Orwell‘s 1984- a tale about a future civilization in which every move its citizens make is watched and controlled by the ominous “Big Brother“- has spiked 127% in sales over the last week. Orwell’s other political classic Animal Farm has risen 314%.
These numbers seem to suggest that readers are turning to the staunchly anti-totalitarian Orwell during these frightening times of broad government power and influence. However, The Washington Examiner observed that 1984 recently observed its 60th anniversary, which may have contributed to the spike.
Are the American people turning to an author who devoted his work to fighting government control? Or is this all just a weird coincidence?
