Kelly Ayotte Supports Immigration Reform Bill

New Hampshire Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte announced on Sunday that she would support the immigration reform bill proposed by the bipartisan Gang of Eight, a group of four Republicans and four Democrats in the Senate. In an op-ed on her website, Ayotte writes that the bill will “stop the flow of illegal immigrants” and “bring undocumented people out of the shadows to separate those seeking economic opportunity from those seeking to harm us (who must be deported).”

While some Republican Senators such as Ayotte, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and Florida Senator Marco Rubio have supported the bill, it is receiving criticism from other Republican Senators. Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, who has indicated willingness to support the bill said, “the only way you can say yes and sell it to the American people is to know that the border is secure, and this bill doesn’t do it.”

Rubio has warned Democrats that without stronger border security, “we’ve got a bill that isn’t going to become law.” The bill needs 60 votes to avoid a filibuster.
