The Further ‘Fundamental Transformation’ of the Military

One year ago almost to the day, the Center for Security Policy’s Frank Gaffney argued the case that President Obama was “fundamentally transforming” the military — and not in a good way:

Perhaps that transformation will manifest itself, among other ways, by precipitating the collapse of the all-volunteer force, as many of those who are serving decline to do so and fewer and fewer new, high-quality recruits enlist. We can ill afford such an Obama legacy in an increasingly dangerous world.

Medal of Honor recipient Major General Patrick Brady (U.S. Army, Ret.) agrees:

Just as the way forward for America is a return to the morality and values of the past, so too must the military return to the readiness standards and common sense of the past. We can survive in a relatively valueless society – but only with a strong and ready military. Sadly the military is mirroring society – the goal of Mr. Obama and progressives – and will soon be impotent.

The transformation of our military continues apace with the recent crackdown on a 25-year Army veteran, provoking outrage on the right from conservatives, including Sarah Palin and Mark Levin.

DoD Directive 1325.6 (PDF) is the military regulation that covers protest and dissent by members of the military. This directive allows members to possess and read anything they want. Limitations apply only to distribution. While our troops are barred from participating in a protest while in uniform, the regulation does not forbid any member of the military from reading a book while in uniform.
