Former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford took an enormous amount of heat in 2009 for an affair with his Argentine mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, to whom he is currently engaged. The politician famously told his staff he was hiking the Appalachian Trail after inexplicably disappearing for several days; it was later revealed that he was actually in Buenos Aires visiting Chapur. He and his wife Jenny subsequently filed for divorce.
But in light of his seemingly resurrected political career, Sanford may want to tell his side of the scandalous story. During an interview with a reporter from the Huffington Post, he alluded to that desire:
Here’s the larger conundrum of the exploration of one’s personal life within the public sphere, which is, there’s always a second half, or a second side, or another part to the story. I’ve never chosen to tell my story. I would love to present the other side of the case … There is a pattern here … I get it. There’s still pain and hurt.
Such ‘pain and hurt’ was on display at the April 2nd celebration of Sanford’s runoff victory over Curtis Bostic. The politician chose this very public fete to introduce his 17-year-old son Bolton to his fiance- the woman who broke up his marriage- for the first time. Jenny later revealed to reporters that “that was indeed Bolton’s first intro and both boys were quite upset and visibly so.” Photographs of the meeting certainly evidence that discomfort.
