Damn: @AP Twitter Account Hacked; Tweets Terrorist Attack at White House; Stock Market Takes Plunge

Apparently the Associated Press’ Twitter account was phish’d this hour. The following tweet was sent out with millions taking notice, ”@AP: Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”

Ethan Klapper, Huffington Post’s Social Media Editor, noted that @AP’s tweets are sent from a social media management platform called SocialFlow, whereas the false tweet was sent from the Web.

At today’s White House daily press briefing, Press Secretary Jay Carney called on the AP reporter first (which is customary), where the reporter used the opportunity to inform other reporters of the false tweet. Carney then confirmed that the President was in fact safe and that he had been with him only minutes prior.

The Dow took a 140-point hit, but bounced back after the tweet was clarified.

The @AP account was suspended after the false Tweet. Here’s AP’s story (via Yahoo News) on AP’s phish.
