A former Marine who was deployed in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm, Curtis Bostic is no stranger to the battleground.
Bostic’s new battleground is now a hotly contested special election in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District (SC-01). A successful trial lawyer, Bostic has been a member of the Bar for nearly 20 years.
In 2000, Bostic was elected to serve on the Charleston County Council, where he served two terms alongside now U.S. Senator Tim Scott. During his time as a county council member, he helped oversee and develop the Charleston Greenbelt Bank ordinance. The bank is charged with preserving and the conservation of natural and/or historical resources. Since its founding in 2004, the bank has raised over $59 million and purchased over 15,000 acres for parks and “greenspace” for Charleston County.
In 2005, Bostic created the Remember Foundation. The foundation is an international humanitarian aid group that assists widows and orphans in six different countries.
The biggest question mark thus far for Bostic’s campaign has been the fact that he lives just outside of SC-01, but Bostic doesn’t intend to let that distract him -
Bostic said Monday his property, 7218 S.C. Highway 165, is about 4,500 feet from the district line that separates the 1st and 6th districts.
But my office, my rental properties, my church, my dentist, my kids’ co-op schools — all of that is in the district.
His runoff opponent Mark Sanford and his camp have yet to raise this issue, although politicos are quick to point out, nobody remembers the last time an outsider won a congressional election.
On the issues, Bostic is a staunch constitutional conservative who supports traditional marriage, Israel, and the right to life. However, Bostic’s biggest issue is no doubt spending, as evidence by his campaign website - www.stopspending.com. Mr. Bostic also touches on state rights, the 2nd amendment, and school choice for parents.
To date, Bostic has raised only $57,000 to spend for the April 2nd runoff. Bostic has already loaned his campaign $150,000. It isn’t much of a secret, and it doesn’t seem to bother the Bostic camp one bit. Bostic campaign manager David O’Connell was quoted as saying this -
I’m not at all concerned about Mark Sanford out-raising us since we just came out of a 16-way primary and were outspent by a staggering margin and still secured our place in the runoff.
