On Monday, District Court Judge Marianne B. Bowler, presided over the initial hearing of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. The hearing took place in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where Tsarnaev is recovering from injuries he sustained during a shootout with police in Watertown, MA last week.
Judge Bowler laid out the charges against Tsarnaev, including “use of a weapon of mass destruction” and “malicious destruction of property resulting in death.” Because of his extensive injuries, including gunshot wounds to the head, neck, leg and hand, Tsarnaev could only nod his head when asked questions, except for when the judge asked if he could afford a lawyer, when Tsarnaev spoke the word “No.” Tsarnaev also waived his right to a detention hearing.
