It’s a horrifying photo that has become a haunting iconic image of the carnage of the Boston Marathon Tragedy: Jeff Bauman Jr. being briskly wheeled away from the bomb site, dazed and clinging to life, with only tattered remains where his lower legs once were. Jeff Bauman Jr. was a victim that day, but even in the face of unfathomable pain and anguish he was decidedly not a victim when he awoke from surgery the next day. He was a hero.
Mr. Bauman gave a description of one of the men who is now being sought by the FBI as an official suspect in the bombings, according to his brother, Chris Bauman in an interview he gave to Bloomberg.
“He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, ‘bag, saw the guy, looked right at me’.” Bauman went on to say that his brother’s description helped the FBI to hone down their search effort, eventually putting them on to the photos of the two men they now seek.
Victimized but not a victim.
