In our season premiere episode recap, we found Don Draper and company in what seemed to be a foreshadowing of grim despair.
Episode two is a little lighter, but you get the feeling that Don’s world is about to unravel.
Heinz beans brings ketchup in for a meeting, but it is all for show. At this point, Don seems “off.” This mixed with his handling of Jaguar’s demands, he is not his usual smooth sailing self.
The show opens with him and Sylvia in bed discussing how she feels uncomfortable with them being friends with each other’s spouses. This is a new dynamic for Don. He has never before let his dalliances get so close to home. This proves true when Megan confides in Sylvia that she has had a miscarriage. Sylvia gets jealous because she realizes that Don has been sleeping with his wife too. This jealousy bubbles over but doesn’t really change anything.
Meanwhile, Peggy Olson is having a hard time managing her team. She has become Don Draper and she seems uncomfortable not with that role but because she is NOT uncomfortable with that role.
Pete is using his apartment in the city for an affair with one of his neighbors that blows up in his face when her husband finds out. We find out that his wife has given him “permission” but just as Don and Peggy are breaking unwritten rules, he broke the unwritten rule of straying too close to home.
This episode appeared to be about breaking the rules. Will this be a theme for this episode or the season? The unwritten rules tell us that we want a happy ending. We NEED a happy ending. But will Don Draper get one? Will anyone at Cooper Sterling Draper Pryce?
