Jury Selection for Zimmerman Trial Could Take Longer Than a Week

The trial of George Zimmerman, who shot and killed Trayvon Martin last year and claimed self-defense, started the jury selection process on Monday, June 10.

Interestingly, the court is only looking for six jurors, with up to four alternates. The selection could take over a week, since there is a pool of around 100 potential jurors. The case was highly publicized in the spring of 2012, after  Martin’s death grabbed national headlines.

The case will likely examine Florida’s controversial Stand-Your-Ground law, which allows for the ‘justifiable use of force’ in self-defense if one has a ‘reasonable belief of an unlawful threat’ without being obligated to first retreat from the scene.

No word yet if the jury will be sequestered, but the identities of potential jurors were kept hidden from media outlets.
