The elder of two Chechnyan brothers suspected in the Boston Marathon bombings, was a competitive Golden Gloves boxer who trained at Wai Kru mixed martial arts gym in Boston. He recently took part in an online photo essay by Johannes Hirn entitled “Will Box for Passport” which features him in various images both in and out of the ring. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed yesterday by authorities while on the run in Watertown, MA. His brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was an all-star wrestler in Boston, is still at large.

Much of the photo essay focuses on the suspect’s Islamic heritage. In one photo, Tamerlan is seen apparently helping his girlfriend with her boxing handwrap outside the ring. The photo is captioned: Tamerlab (sic) says his girlfriend is half Portuguese, half Italian…and converted to Islam: ‘She’s beautiful, man!’
