Old Blue Rugby Football Club drops Elite Cup opener to cross-town rival NYAC

New York, New York – On a deceptively cold Saturday afternoon, the New York Athletic Club ousted the Old Blue RFC 29-14 in the opening weekend of the Elite Cup Championship (the USA’s top level of rugby. As close to professional as you can get in the United States) in what has been dubbed the “Subway series of championship rugby!”

The New York Athletic Club put themselves on the board early with a try (touchdown) early on by Center Dan Grace, with Old Blue’s flyhalf (kind of like a quarterback) converted a penalty kick to bring the score to 5-3. Unfortunately, the Old Blue would never have the upper hand as a lot of back and forth play kept possession out of the Old Blue’s hands.

It wasn’t all bad for the Old Blue as their dominant scrum work kept NYAC on their heels, and there were several big hits, including a blind side barn-buster from Adam Siddal that left one NYAC player dazed and confused.

Next up the Old Blue will head down to Marietta, Georgia to play Life University on the 6th of April.

Full Disclosure: I have played rugby for the Old Blue in New York City for several years, and am (a bit) biased. Expect them to become your favorite rugby team.
