Lesbian Sex Offender Knew She Was Breaking Law, Documents Show

Florida sex offender Kaitlyn Hunt, whose case became a cause for many gay rights activists this year, was aware that her affair with a 14-year-old was illegal, documents obtained from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office show.

“Yes, I know I’m 18 and can get in trouble,” Hunt said in an online conversation more than a month before her February arrest, “but I understand the consequences and I know what I got myself into when I entered the relationship with [the underage girl].”

Hunt, who last month pleaded no contest to multiple felony charges in the case, has claimed in media interviews that she did not realize her involvement with the minor was a crime in Florida, where the legal age of consent is 16. “I wouldn’t have continued, if I really knew what the laws were and if I knew what I was getting myself into,” Hunt told ABC’s Matt Gutman in an interview broadcast on the network’s 20/20 program.

Yet in an online conversation with a cousin of the minor victim, Hunt was warned about the potential legal consequences in January. “As an adult you are over the age of 18 and having any inappropriate sexual contact with a person … under the age of 16 is illegal,” the cousin told Hunt in the Jan. 9 message, warning “when her parents find out I know they will press charges.”

Court documents in the case were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act by Jeanette Runyon and published by Matt Ross at his blog Conservative Hideout. “[W]hy did the Hunt family state that Kaitlyn was never warned to end the relationship, when this conversation obviously happened?” Ross said in releasing text of the conversation between Hunt and the victim’s cousin. “Also, I have to ask why Julia Graves, Kaitlyn Hunt’s lawyer, allow her client to lie on national TV?  Surely they were aware of this exchange, as it was in the police file? Or, was it that they thought that this exchange would never see the light of day? No matter which way you slice it, Kaitlyn Hunt knowingly and intentionally lied on national television.”

Kaitlyn Hunt was a high school senior when she was arrested in February on two felony sex charges. Her case did not attract national attention until May, when Hunt’s family mounted an Internet “Free Kate” campaign, portraying the former cheerleader as an innocent target of homophobic prosecutors. The American Civil Liberties Union and Equality Florida, the state’s largest gay rights organization, declared their support for Hunt, who was featured in national media, including an appearance on NBC’s Today show.

Hunt rejected two plea bargain offers that would have kept her out of prison, and was out on bond awaiting trial when investigators learned she had violated a “no-contact” order that was a condition of her pre-trial release. Her bond was revoked at an Aug. 20 hearing where prosecutors showed that Hunt had sent thousands of text messages as well as obscene videos and photos to the younger girl, who is still under the legal age of consent. On Oct. 3, Hunt accepted a plea bargain that will keep her jailed until Dec. 20 before releasing her under strict terms of community supervision.

If this was an 18-year old man having sex with a 14-year old girl, the entire country would be screaming to have him tarred, feathered, dragged and quartered. Love the double standard that comes with having a penis.
