New Sex Scandal Wrecks Anthony Weiner Comeback Attempt

Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner‘s hope of reviving his political career by running for mayor of New York City was shattered Tuesday when yet another woman revealed she had been in a relationship with the Democrat more than a year after he resigned from office in 2011.

Weiner admitted the authenticity of online messages between him and an anonymous woman who says she was 22 when she became involved with him in the wake of the so-called “WeinerGate” scandal that forced him out of office in June 2011. At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Weiner said he would remain a candidate for mayor of New York, despite proof that he did not change his behavior after that high-profile sexting scandal.

Wiener “lured” the young woman “via Facebook,” wrote Nik Richie of TheDirty.com, saying that the online relationship — “sending sexually explicit pictures of each other and having sexual conversations via phone” — between the married 48-year-old politician and the woman continued for six months. The damage of the revelations will likely destroy Weiner’s hope of winning the New York mayoralty, Mara Liasson of National Public Radio said Tuesday evening on Fox News: “I just don’t see how he can survive this … This has to be the end.”

The woman who told her story to Richie said, “I was 22 and in a bad place. … I really admired him. … I thought he was misunderstood. Until I got to know him. I thought I loved him. Pretty pathetic. … I was young and dumb. I just want people to really know he’s lying when he acts like he has changed.”

The woman said Weiner offered to get her a condominium in Chicago, and offered to recommend her for a job at the D.C.-based liberal news site Politico.com. “So they are looking to create a panel of bloggers … can I give him your deets?” Politico denied any knowledge of such an arrangement.

“The best part was Anthony used an alias this time thinking this would protect him,” Richie wrote. “Anthony Weiner used the name ‘Carlos Danger’ when he would email pictures of his penis via Yahoo. Which makes me believe Anonymous wasn’t the only girl he was working.” The revelation of Weiner’s sexting alias immediately provoked mockery online.

The woman told Richie that she never actually had sex with Weiner, but did have “phone sex” and exchange sexually graphic messages and images. The relationship evidently began in July 2012, shortly before a People magazine published a glowing feature profile article about Weiner, showing him with wife Huma Abedin and their infant child. In that interview Abedin, a top aide to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said since the scandal that drove him out of Congress, Weiner had “spent every day … trying to be the best dad and husband he can be.”
